What is sea glass?

Physically weathered glass that has been naturally tumbled by the oceans tides, currents, waves and sand. Sea glass has a frosted powdery complexion that glimmers in the sunlight upon the shore. Each piece is completely unique, with its own story where it was found and what it once was. They take decades and even up to centuries to form until the edges are perfectly rounded so that can be made into sea glass jewellery. Living in Cornwall we have a strong maritime connection, many of our glass washed ashore comes from shipwrecks and vintage fishing buoys. Another source is Victorian tableware, Newquay especially was a thriving holiday destination with 1000’s of people descending to our beautiful town and beaches. Before the early 1900’s everything came in glass bottles or jars. At this time, it was common for people to discard their unwanted glassware into the sea, thus creating these fascinating ocean gems we find today.

Caring For Your Jewellery

Silver will tarnish and dull over time, it is a natural process caused by oxidisation. Some activities can speed up the process however, there are some certain steps you can take to keep your jewellery looking sparkling and shiny.

Prevention is the best solution, it’s worth investing in a silver polishing cloth and regularly buff over your pieces to avoid excessive build up and darkening. When not wearing your jewellery please keep in a sealed zip lock bag. It is recommended that you do not wear your jewellery in chlorinated water and be sure to take off whilst using cleaning products. Never apply beauty products i.e. perfume and lotions to areas where jewellery will touch the skin as these will all enhance the speed of oxidisation.

You can enhance the vibrance of your glass by blotting a tiny tiny amount of baby oil onto it’s surface. This will not harm the glass or silver, it will just give it a nice glow as if it’s just been collected from the sea.

What kind of chain do you use?

All my necklaces are made from super strong, durable, sterling silver Belcher chain. Named after a bare knuckle boxer “Jim Belcher” from the 18th Century.

All necklaces are then fastened with a lobster clasp. Simple and sturdy, these claw shaped clasps open and close with the aid of a “sprung trigger” making sure you won’t lose your pendant.

What length of chain should I get?

That is a very good question! Please look at the image below to see what length of chain you would prefer. The average length is 18”.
Each pendant is designed to stay on its original chain to avoid losing / dropping the glass or gemstone on the floor.
If you change your mind on the length you have chosen, no problem. Pop over a little message and we can swap it to your desired length. Return postage is to be paid by the customer.
