A new chapter – Jewellery Making Workshops in Cornwall, lessons and short courses.
I’m incredibly excited to teach and pass on the joy that making your own jewellery can bring
What a fabulous start to the new year! I look forward to welcoming you all into The Sea Glass Studio.
Where I will be teaching jewellery making workshops.
Since starting Sadie Jewellery 9 years ago, I’ve grown from from being a hobbyist in the spare bedroom, then moving outside to a small custom built cabin in the garden overlooking the beaches of Newquay, to shared silversmithing spaces inside galleries.
To now, this present day in 2023, I’ve opened my very own purpose-built studio ‘The Sea Glass Studio’.
The Sea Glass Studio is nestled within Jubilee Wharf in Penryn: overlooking the sleepy winding river, the idea behind the studio is to not only house Sadie Jewellery, but to be a multi-use teaching space for lots of creative pursuits and workshops.
In this custom-built teaching space, groups of up to 8 people will be able to attend classes and group workshops with all tools and materials provided.
Alongside hosting Jewellery workshops, The Sea Glass Studio will have courses of all kinds: painting, drawing, photography, film developing and more – with guest teachers and artists dropping in and hosting their own courses within the space too.
Workshops
The first courses are starting in February 2023. To start with, there are a few item-specific jewellery courses taught by me, and a few classes from local artist Gemma Lessinger.
Gemma specialises in textural seascapes using recycled materials – her work is celebrated all over the world and has recently had a mind-blowing 15mx9m mural of her ‘Fistral Blues’ installed in the UK’s first Spaceport here in Cornwall.
The three workshops I will be running to start with are called ‘Introduction to Silversmithing’ where you will learn to make Stacking Rings, ‘Friends of the Sea’ where you will learn to make miniature silver sea creatures to put on rings and pendants (my favourite is Larry the Lobster!) and finally the ‘Sea Glass jewellery workshop – bezel setting’, where you will learn to make wearable treasure, in ring or pendant form, using Sea Glass that I have collected ready in store (or your own).
Gemma’s ‘Textured Ocean Painting Workshop’ has multiple specific dates available. Lasting approx. 4 hours, you will learn the art of ‘re-purposing’ to create your own textured expression of the Ocean using recycled materials. Everything required to take part in the workshop will be supplied (as they are in every course), and you can be a complete beginner or an experienced artist wanting to earn something new – all abilities are welcome in this fascinating and highly rewarding class.
Hot Design / Benching
Alongside the workshops, I also want to offer a version of hot-desking, or as I like to call it – Hot Benching! Once a course has been completed (or if you’re demonstrably familiar with the equipment already), you will be able to hire 1 of 4 available silversmithing benches – fully equipped with tools included – for a day rate of £20. This enables you to continue your learning and develop your skills without investing in your own tools and equipment.
Open for business
A lot of people came in and saw the space for the first time over the 10th/11th of December at the Jubilee Wharf Xmas Market, of which I’m hugely grateful for, and I’m really looking forward to welcoming everyone back. As well as those who I’ve met already, I can’t wait to meet those who I haven’t yet – going forward I will be open throughout the week and occasionally at the weekends too.
Should you wish to drop in and visit/say hello – you are more than welcome to! The idea for the Studio is for it to be open every weekday, and occasionally at weekends when I’m running courses or when specific dates require. If you’re ever in doubt, just message me on social media or via email.
Please note: whilst the jewellery courses are aimed at beginners to start with (though any skill level is welcome), for the moment the age restriction is set at over 18’s. However, as the courses go on and inevitably develop, I will endeavour to streamline a process safe for children.
I can’t wait to meet/see you all again at The Sea Glass Studio. Please take a look at the classes available below.
